Children First and YMCA of Bucks and Hunterdon Counties invite you to attend a roundtable discussion on Thursday, June 8 at 10 AM at the Doylestown YMCA Teen Center. The purpose of this briefing is to review the findings of Start Strong's wage report about the cost of working in early childhood education and discuss the implication of these findings for parents who need to go to work, children who need safe environments to learn, and businesses that need a stable labor force. We will bring together community stakeholders, providers, legislators, and parents to join the conversation.

For the past year, Children First has been working with the Reinvestment Fund, in partnership with the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) and the Department of Labor & Industry on a wage study to document the low salaries of the sector. Wage data from the Department of Labor and Industry for 30,000 individuals was matched with demographic information from OCDEL. Additionally, Children First surveyed the field, asking over 3,400 early childhood educators about how these wages impacted their lives. The findings are deeply concerning, as it indicates that early childhood teachers are making only $12.43 an hour (across the state) and that nearly 50% of respondents to our survey either intend to leave their job or are unsure if they will stay.
